As part of the Science Month, the INCAR center participated in the traditional technology fair of the Liceo Insular of Achao. Students and teachers from other schools, as well as the community of Achao, got to examine the work in each of the areas of the Liceo that were presented in the fair. INCAR activities began on 26 October with a talk on sustainable aquaculture and environmental monitoring presented by the marine biologist Jaime Gutiérrez especially for Liceo students specializing in aquaculture.

In the open session that began on 27 October the aquaculture students presented a stand with the title “Aquaponics: a sustainable aquaculture system for Achao”; visitors had a close up view of the system and could understand a bit more about a combination of freshwater fish (trout) and hydroponic vegetable (lettuce) cultivation and why it is sustainable. This is one result of a project on aquaponics which INCAR has been developing with the Liceo Insular de Achao since 2015.

Another presentation was entitled “Caligus, the sea louse”, which included samples of this parasite that could be observed under a microscope and the key scientific concepts being developed to combat sustainably this pest that attacks salmonids. Students of the scientific-humanist and technical-professional modes also participated in this fair with a number of stands where they presented their studies elaborated in 2016 in their courses and workshops.

One of the objectives of the INCAR Center is to produce first-class knowledge of the impacts of aquaculture on ecosystems, including the ecological, biological, economic and social dimensions that affect our surroundings. Thus on November 3 and 4, 2016 Dr. Doris Soto, senior INCAR researcher, organized a seminar to discuss and study the implications of climate change for aquaculture from the perspectives of the different research lines of the center, which was held in Katalpi Park, 18 km from Puerto Montt. The principal researchers, associated researchers and professionals of each research line of the Center participated. There was also an open seminar in which national and international experts participated. The seminar finished with the participation of representatives of the private sector and the sustainable salmon and mussel strategic programs of CORFO.

In the discussions it became obvious that both climate change and climate variability must be approached. It also became clear that there is no consensus with regard to carrying capacity in aquaculture; changes in the existing norms are needed. The presentations demonstrated that there are a number of research initiatives in areas appropriate for aquaculture, especially in southern Chile, but few efforts in the central and northern areas of the country. It was agreed that there should be better coordination among the different research products, and that there is a need to improve the capability of the State to make use of information and generate coordinated responses.

What are the “takeaway lessons”? The workshop identified some key elements for the design of a research strategy on climate change and aquaculture with the interaction of different INCAR research lines. It also demonstrated that the State has invested important funds in research and development, and there must be improvement in the dialogue and interaction within the research community.

“Doctorate student in UACh’s Aquaculture Sciences awarded thesis continuity FONDEF-VIU”

Biochemist and Dr. René Vásquez, doctorate student in Aquaculture Sciences from Universidad Austral de Chile (with headquarters in Puerto Montt), and young INCAR and FONDAP researcher from UACh’s Biochemistry and Microbiology (RP3), was awarded the first stage of the sixth contest of Appreciation of Research in College (VIU in Spanish) from the Fund of Scientific and Technologic Development (Fondep), with the topic “Epigenetic Modulators for Aquaculture”.

The proposal carried out by Dr. René Manríquez, is based on looking new therapeutic alternatives, drugs, or natural supplements to fight the different diseases in aquaculture in a palliative way. In this regard, features of antiviral responses in salmonids were identified, which are inhibited by pathogen virus through epigenetic mechanisms. Therefore, it is important for the work group to identify molecules and/or natural supplements that, by being administrated through diet, can have the capacity of modificating epigenetically the immune response of fish.

Dr. René Manríquez pointed out that this project “will allow the continuity of the research developed during my doctorate thesis, which is also the kick start for ‘epigenetic diet’ research capable of contributing to the decrease of mortality generated in the aquaculture industry by pathogens like IPNV virus”.

Dr. José Luis Iriarte, director of the graduate students, headquarters in Puerto Montt, pointed out that “it adjusts completely to the objectives and graduation profile of the doctorate program, and, as such, we are proud of this accomplishment by the new generation of young researchers focused on relevant aquaculture issues. This is one achievement more by the students, which are being trained as researchers by UACh at an excellent scientific level for the Southern region”. Appreciation of Reseach in College Contest (VIU).
This fund focuses on the promotion of an innovative entrepreneurship culture in the university community, based on the appreciation of the research done in Chilean universities by undergraduate and postgraduate students.  For that, the program promotes the training needed to carry out new entrepreneurship, business, or companies based on the research done by those students according to their thesis.The program is focused on the students as producers of knowledge.

“Cycle of workshops of scientific writing by INCAR come to an end”

From October 12th to 13th, the “Writing of scientific articles of high importance workshop”, dictated by Dr. Eduardo Fuentes and Ashley van Cott, from BioPub company, was held at the UNAB headquarters of República in Santiago and Viña del Mar.
A total of 12 students from the line of research in Marine Genomics and Native Resources participated in the workshop, deepening on how to properly write a scientific article or “paper”.

The activities during both days considered theory and practice, which had a great reception from the members of the line 2 of INCAR, who face directly the challenges of writing an article of this nature. It is expected that these tools can help in the training of the students and professionals that participated in the workshop, as well as generating indirectly interest in writing science texts, improving their scientific writing skills so they can publish in international magazines.

“INCAR, CRHIAM, and CICAT are joining to commence Llico’s scientific meeting “Water and Sustainability: Science for lif.””

Over a hundred of second year elementary students from Tubul, Punta Lavapié, Laraquete, Llico, and Arauco, will participate in the meeting, which starts with a visit to different centers of Universidad de Concepción.

The meeting was organized by INCAR, Center of Water Resources for Aquaculture and Mining (CRHIAM), Interactive Center of Science, Art, and Technology (CICAT), and Llico’s Liceo Técnico Pesquero Filidor Gaete Monsálvez. The purpose of the meeting is to promote and disseminate science in a didactic and entertaining way, making the students interested in water-wise science issues.

Francisco Paredes, director of Llico’s Liceo Filidor Gaete Monsálvez stated that “it is very important to make the students from the coastal edge in the commune of Arauco interested in science. Interacting and experimenting in the different laboratories will definitely be an enriching and important experience for our young students”.

The first activity of these scientific meetings will begin at CICAT, located in Coronel. There, the students will have the opportunity of interacting with water-wise and environmental samples, and science workshops, in addition to the guided visit to the interactive sample “My super brain”.

During the afternoon, the students will be taken to the facilities of Universidad de Concepción to visit the laboratories associated with INCAR, where studies of oceanography and marine biotechnology are performed. Additionally, they will enjoy a tour of the facilities of the Faculty of Natural and Oceanographic Sciences from UdeC.

“For our center, it is highly relevant to strengthen the link with coastal communities through this kind of dissemination activities with aquaculture high schools and elementary schools, which are very distant from the scientific world. We have worked with Llico’s high school for a long time; with them we have organized different projects like Explore with Aquaponics. And this year is the second version of the science meetings, which we expect can still be organized” stated Pablo Carrasco, in charge of INCAR’s human resources and relation with society.

On the other hand, CRHIAM will organize a tour for the young visitants to the sedimentology, fish, and macroinvertebrate bentonics laboratories located at the Center of Environmental Sciences-EULA, with the goal of presenting different works of CRHIAM.

Dr. Felipe Tucca, in charge of CRHIAM’s activities, stated “we are very happy to be part of this meeting that will allow students from coastal edges to learn about the work that the researchers of water resources issues do. As the center of priority areas, we feel deeply engaged with the dissemination of science and technology to generate opportunities for interaction between the academic world and the community”.

The second stage of this meeting will take place from November 7th to 10th, at Llico’s Liceo Técnico Pesquero Filidor Gaete Monsálvez. At this opportunity, the researchers will take the presentations and workshops to the locality in order to bring science closer to hundreds of young people from the coastal edge. Likewise, there will be a science dissemination fair open to educational institutions in the province of Arauco and will have the participation of different research centers.
